This was a still life done in my painting class, where there had to be repetition of the same type of object. I chose a pile of socks. I love fun socks (Mar 2009).
Y'know, at a first glance of the thumbnail, the realism caught me off guard and it looked for all the world like a photo. That's an impressive thing to pull off

Gorgeous! wonderful work on this! it's very nicely done shading and perspective-wise. but net time- Mix colours for the shading. use contrasting colours in your shading. eg. blue with orange shadows etc. Adding a touch of those colours really will bring your future pictures to life.
Thank you! I definitely need more contrast on the shading of the multi-colored squares socks, the green polka-dotted sock, and the green-pink-orange-blue-white striped sock, as I ran out of time before I felt completely satisfied with them. But you are right that I need more contrast overall. I shaded the yellow of the yellow-blue striped socks with blue (close enough), and those are the socks with which I am most pleased. On my next painting, there will be a lot of green. I'll make a conscious effort to shade with red.
This is really, really nicely done. In fact, I'd say it's your best piece. Is this oil?
The folds in things impresses me most, because I love shadows...but you pulled off patterns really well, too. I'm not distracted by them, and they read as part of the sock, and not as something abstract. This looks like our sack of lost socks at home. I don't even look for matching ones anymore. Freaking awesome.
Thanks! It was indeed made with oils, and I agree that this is my best work so far. I intend to set it as my Featured Deviation once it rotates off the Newest block.
I am glad the patterns look right. I was really worried about that as I was starting the painting.
With fun socks, I almost feel like they do not have to match. If you are wearing one multicolored striped sock, how much crazier is it to be wearing a polka-dotted sock on the other foot?
No way, this is awesome. I thought it was a photo too, which made me go "???" because I remembered you don't care that much about photography. And then I saw it enlarged and went "!!!". Really, one of your best works so far. The shading on the purple socks is incredible.

Teehee, you responded with two different kinds of triple punctuation.
