The most interesting one I came across was ~ifavecrap. This user explains in their journal why they don't think certain pieces qualify as art, and then they find similar pieces on deviantArt that they think DO qualify as art. This is interesting, because it is sort of a constructive criticism done with imagery instead of just words. For instance, from their latest journal: [link] vs. [link]
The critique here is very obvious with the juxtaposition of the two. The first photo is just a picture of the dog lying on the grass. The dog is not doing anything particularly interesting (as, in fact, the artist says in the description, it is just being a dog). The picture is not clear or close enough to show off any interesting features of the dog, such as the texture of the fur, or the moistness of the nose, etc. It is not lit interestingly. The dog is towards the top of the photo, and there is something else in the yard at the top. The rest is just grass. This makes it highly unbalanced toward the top, and the negative space is uninteresting. It appears to be just a snapshot the user took of their dog one day on a whim. There does not seem to be any artistic forethought or artistic effort. It is merely an ordinary, everyday, photograph, as if taken by a lay person, not a photographer.
The second photograph is also of a dog. The dog is a split-second away from catching a filthy soccer ball, which is seemingly hanging in midair mere centimeters from the dog's wide open mouth. You can clearly see the dog's fur flying with movement. The dog's eye is bulging, as if with excitement. Everything is in mid-motion, yet all the details are clear. The lighting is nice, and actually adds an extra bit of interest, since it divides the photo into a light and a dark half. The dog, ball, and even the patio and the grass are well positioned in the frame and are balanced. And, speaking of a frame, there is a dark frame added around the photo, which adds crispness and a little extra touch to the photo. The contrast is good may have been enhanced a bit (or the photo just turned out that well). The shot itself may have been planned, or it might have gotten lucky, but either way, it is definitely art, in that artistic effort went into it. Plus, it is interesting to look at. I am generally unimpressed by photography, but this piece earned a fave from me (and when I fave something, it means I do indeed really like the art).
Anyway, I think I am going to try out this method of critique, as it makes certain points immediately clear that I would ramble on about in a massive comment, like I did above. I'm going to try [link] (from ~ifavtrash's favorites) vs. [link] The first is a picture of a butterfly that landed on the person's wrist. While it is cool to have a butterfly land on your wrist, and cool to have a camera handy at the time, the picture is blurry (which is understandable due to the rush of quick-take-a-picture-before-it-flies-away!, yet decreases the quality of the photo). They lighting is also not very good, and the background appears to be of a roof and the street below, which is the less than ideal backdrop. While this is certainly a very nice picture to put in a photo album or a myspace, if it were my photo, I would not have posted it on deviantArt. It is a nice moment to have been able to capture and save for yourself, but I would not say it is art. The second picture, on the other hand, is of a similar butterfly on a flower. The picture is closer, and the butterfly is not blurry at all, so you can see all the details on the butterfly. It also is in an interesting position, with the one wing of the butterfly aimed directly at the viewer, rather than the typically seen shot of the butterfly with the wings flat. The lighting and contrast are good. Since the camera was focused on the butterfly, the background blurs out and is non-distracting. The flowers aren't in the best focus, but the decision was probably made that it was more important to have the butterfly in focus than the flowers. Effort went into this photograph, and it is definitely art.
Devious Comments
but i do understand there point in some way. Deviantart is not the right place to upload random photographs or privat pictures.
same for crappy drawn scribbles.
but i guess i did that myself by uploading a blurry photo from my pet
The photo of your pet has a good idea behind it and good composition. I have never heard of a degu before. I personally think it would be perfect if not for the blurriness. It has a neat eye and I would like to see it that close and but also clearly. Here's a deviation I found that is somewhat similar: [link] though the focus is more on the whiskers. (Using this method is also fun because I go looking for art that I would not look for otherwise. There are lots of cute rodents on dA, hehe). If you still have the pet, you can always try to take another photo if you would like to (hopefully it is not the fault of the camera freaking out because the subject is too close).
I fear there is no way to tell people that their art is not really art if not through criticism, but what if they just don't listen to what people have to say against their work? Really, I fear that there is nothing to do about it.
Still, not every deviantART user will end up as a recognized artist. What really bugs me is that there are some awesome artists who are almost unknown, and some people who should really change their mind about their interests who get loads of appreciation just because they draw things that people will usually like or go around shouting that THEIR ART HAS A DEEP HIDDEN MEANING!1 and refuse all criticisms because YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND MY FRAME OF MIND SO YOUR CRITICISM IS POINTLESS. I then don't see what's the point of even putting such oh-so-deep art on the web, and on an art community of all things, if you already know nobody will understand you. But now I am going off-topic, so...
Nothing to say about your comparisons: you have definitely a good point, I won't change a single comma of what you said. And that's all from me.
(Unrelated note: I should get my entry for the logo contest before the due date, for a change. Heh.)
i came to Da cause i had problems to upload my pics on another page i was before (animexx.de it is called)
the admins there annonced that they will check every single pic before uploading, with the result not even the scribbles, but every picture that wasn´t proper scanned or just to dark wasn´t allowed on the site. later they annonced that only anime-work is allowed on the site. that was the point there i said, no, i am leaving.
you see even then its annoying, private photographs and crappy scribbles are things you can always ignore. maybe thats the best thing you can do about it.
i know how you feel, were are so many artist who make me feel ashamed then i look at my stuff XD there are always better people then me, thats normal. but it often inspired me XD
lol thank you for taking the time for the suggestions. that mouse looks much better XD but actually i even did not take the picture, my boyfriend did, cause i suck in taking pictures. Its difficult to get a good pic from these two. degus never sit still, they are always jumping and running. thats why they come out mostly blurry X3
I would not want deviantArt to impose a such a system, primarily due to the ridiculous wait times to post art. On the other hand, I feel like users should impose a bit more self-moderation. All the things like poor scanning really detract from a work, sometimes to the point of making it impossible to appreciate. Just recently I saw a drawing that seemed like it was cool, but it was so blurry and dark, I could barely see it. I do not understand why some artists do not take enough pride in their work to ensure they present it well, or at least well enough to see, for crying out loud! Otherwise, what's the point?
On the degus, it makes sense that a picture would be blurry if they are in constant motion, heh. Luck would definitely be important in a photo of them then... Are they diurnal or nocturnal? Maybe you can catch a photo of them while they are asleep? Though that would make you unable to capture the eye... hmmm...
Don't quote me on this, but I think SheezyArt has some sort of method of voting to decrease the popularity of the piece. That just seems like an awful idea to me. It would without a doubt be abused. Just imagine the petty wars, or people going and decreasing the popularity of things simply because the pieces are popular.
I don't think less skilled artists should get a new hobby. I think good art is something that anyone can make with enough practice. Though they need to actually be trying...
Also: YOUR CRITICISM IS INVALID BECAUSE OF MY STYLE!!!!
Yay, contest entry!
I guess even then they wanted to, they are not able to impose that system, cause there are to many members and with that to many pics. they could not deal with that large number of submissions.
true, but you know how it can be. sometimes something wents wrong with the scanner for example. and then you try to fix it, and after a while you are so frustrated that you just say , i don´t care i upload it now just like it is. in the end everyone decides on their own.
Everyone told me that degus are diurnal, but mine also wake up in the night and make so much noise, i am not able to sleep then they stay in my room at night. <_< hehe, i will try, they look too cute then they are sleepy XD
