Fall Semester

Tue Oct 7, 2008, 1:36 PM
Hi all. This school semester is going to be tough for me, as I am taking some really demanding and crucial classes, yet, at the same time, I finally managed to fit a real art department drawing class into my schedule. :D Yay!

I was really feeling a need for a formal art class. The class I took last semester was computer science, not art, so the expectation level on assignments was really low. I wasn't putting in all that much effort, yet what I made still went well beyond the requirements for the projects and made me look like I was sucking up. Also, besides a little introduction to Maya, I didn't really learn anything new. It served primarily as an excuse to keep doing the art I was working on already, but it was homework, so I was able to let myself devote a little more time to it than usual.

So, overall, I felt like I was stagnating artistically. Now that I am taking this art class, I'm feeling the artistic juices coming back. I have a really good professor, and this is also the first time I have ever drawn nude models, so I really feel like I am learning a lot in terms of anatomy and new techniques.

If you see some newer things added to my gallery marked as mature, they are simply nude models, not anything scandalous. :ohnoes:

I am also taking a class specifically on 3ds Max (no wasting time with Photoshop, huzzah!), which should also teach me a lot. I'll have a little animation to show you by Winter Break. Hopefully I'll be able to put enough time into it so that it looks at least somewhat like how I envision it in my head...

  • Mood: Artistic
  • Listening to: Trinity Blood OST
  • Playing: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Drinking: Water

As eye-burny as it was for me drawing a forty-something naked hairy dude, it also taught me a great deal of stuff about human proportion (and stopped me drawing mega huge heads!)

3D animation, huh? I look forward to seeing what you bring from that!

you self-portraits are making me want to practice my self-portraits skills, which have never been attempted by me. so your art classes might help me develope more. put up all your stuffs, maybe i'll be inspired.

Hey you! I'm glad you're doing life drawing. It really is important for understanding anatomy and structure. That said....I hate life drawing. So very much. It's such a trial for me. I just don't have the stamina for it. =0=

Isn't this your last year in school? As I remember, you're a year younger than I am.

Yeah, I'm a senior, though I intend to go to graduate school.

I don't understand what you mean. You get tired in the middle of a drawing?
:iconspookymeggie:
I do animation-focused life drawing, so instead of sustained poses we do sets of 30 second poses, and one, three, and five minutes poses, and we draw for three hour stretches. I can't focus with music, but I get fidgety, and then my drawing suffers and I get discouraged... It's the class I hate most. I hate newsprint, I hate conte, I hate standing.

Basically, I don't like anything I'm not immediately good at. My classmates are all VERY good, and I'm not terribly confident. =_=

Ah, ok. I could see how if the pose kept changing that fast, you could lose focus. I'd need time to get in the zone on each pose. Also, it's really disappointing for me when I run out of time and would like to finish a drawing but can't. And that's after 30 minutes, not 3.

In high school, we only ever used black conte on newsprint (occasionally bristol), and I was not a fan of that either. In this class, we use sanguine conte on charcoal paper. The color doesn't matter, but it is nice to switch it up. The charcoal paper work is much nicer; on newsprint, it seems like the conte dust is all just going to fall off. But I guess since you are making tons of quick drawings, it doesn't make sense to use more expensive paper...

As for standing, do you have adjustable chairs? Our professor recommends standing, but most of us just adjust our chairs so that we are high enough. I wouldn't be able to stand for that long either...

Aw, don't be discouraged. You'll get it. Maybe you should sit-in on a class with longer poses so that you can get in some good practice without getting so frustrated, and maybe that will help you work harder, better, faster, stronger (lol) in the other class.
:iconritabuuk:
Yeeeah. Luckily the models in my class are pretty neutral. They aren't ugly, but they aren't really attractive either. It was really easy to get over the shock of having a naked person in the classroom, and instead just see them as shapes to be drawn.
:iconspookymeggie:
*sigh* I know I should...there are free life drawing hours every day...but I Just HATE it so much. =_=

...I should institute a reward system for myself, like when I as little and had to go to the dentist, or to swim classes.

...But then I'll either be fat, or own WAY too many things with Pikachu on them.
